The first version of a rescue dog you meet is not always the pup you will eventually get to know. Fear can make an animal withdraw so deeply that their personality remains hidden for weeks or even longer. Elroy initially appeared completely shut down after his rescue, so much so that he spent his first week staring at a wall. Now, his foster family is slowly discovering a much more playful and trusting side of him.
Rescue Beagle with painful past takes time but slowly starts trusting again
A video shared by @hera_the_maligator documents Elroy’s gradual transformation from a fearful dog into one who is beginning to explore his new life. The pup was one of more than 2,000 Beagles rescued from Ridglan Farms. The commercial Beagle-breeding facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, is said to have supplied dogs for biomedical and veterinary research.
In fact, multiple animal rights groups had accused Ridglan Farms of serious animal mistreatment, including keeping Beagles in harsh conditions. Elroy had reportedly spent nearly two years confined in a cage, making his fear of the outside world understandable.
When he first arrived at his foster home, the pup struggled to engage with his new environment. According to text shared in the video, he spent his entire first week doing little more than staring at a wall. After so much time in a cage, the freedom and unfamiliar surroundings of a home were apparently too much for him to process.
His foster family, however, did not expect an immediate transformation. They gave him room to settle in and allowed him to decide when he was ready to interact. Slowly, signs of change began to appear.
“One day, he started doing things I never thought I’d see,” the foster parent explains. Elroy began venturing out of his shell and interacting more with the people caring for him. As his confidence grew, he started trusting them and eventually began enjoying activities outside.
One particularly encouraging moment shows Elroy playing in the yard, behaving much like any other happy dog. It was a striking contrast to the Beagle who had once spent his days staring at a wall because he was too frightened to engage with his surroundings.
The experience taught his foster family that progress does not always happen in obvious ways. “I realized you can’t rush trust, but you can watch it grow,” the fosterer added. They also reflected that Elroy was not necessarily becoming a “different dog.” Rather, they were finally getting the chance to meet the pup who had been there all along, beneath the fear and uncertainty.
