Bruce, a senior Golden Retriever and adopted pup, finally got the backyard moment his family had dreamed about. His moms, Aub and Kori Halter, shared a video of him running across a rented fenced yard in March 2025. The moment came five months after his adoption, following heartworm treatment, exercise restrictions, and years without proper exercise. For Bruce, that open grass meant freedom, safety, and pure joy.
Rescue dog runs free for the first time after years without proper exercise and months of recovery
The reel uploaded by @seniorboybruce shows Bruce racing through a large backyard with a toy in his mouth. On-screen text says his family will do everything possible to give him the fenced backyard he deserves. Mom Kori can be heard saying they had never seen him run like that before.
His family explained that Bruce had heartworm treatment in November. He then stayed on strict exercise restrictions until the end of December. Since he had gone years without proper movement before adoption, they had to build his strength slowly and carefully.
When the weather finally cleared, they rented a one-acre fenced yard through SniffSpot. The dry grass gave Bruce a safe place to run without slipping. His family said it was the first time he got to run free since adoption, and possibly the first time.
The rescue dog has since shown that he is still a puppy at heart. He runs through the house with a toy, tries to chase bunnies and squirrels on walks, and loves running beside his moms at the park.
However, Bruce does not yet have his own fenced yard. His family said unexpected home renovations after a burst pipe and an ongoing medical journey paused the fence fund. Still, they are saving again to give him the peaceful backyard he deserves.
