A dog’s age doesn’t determine how much love they have left to give. However, it can sometimes affect how quickly dogs are noticed in a shelter, as highlighted by a recent video on Instagram. While puppies often attract immediate attention, older dogs can spend weeks or even months waiting for someone to see past the number on their kennel card. One shelter is hoping that changes for Charlie, a six-year-old Pit Bull whose joyful personality continues to shine despite losing the home he once knew.

Surrendered shelter dog may be 6 years old but he’s still a puppy at heart

Charlie may be six years old, but he still approaches life with the enthusiasm of a much younger dog. The lovable Pit Bull is featured in a video shared by Lancaster Animal Care Center on Instagram. His cheerful demeanor has captured the attention of many viewers. The video opens with the message, “Surrendered at 6 years old… and somehow Charlie is still this happy,” before showing him eagerly greeting staff members from behind his kennel door.

His excitement is impossible to miss. As people approach, Charlie happily waits for attention, seemingly unaware that his life changed dramatically when he was surrendered. The shelter explains through text in the video that Charlie doesn’t know his person said they had “no time” for him. Instead of dwelling on what he has lost, he continues welcoming every visitor with the same hopeful attitude.

Later in the video, Charlie heads outside for some time in the yard, where his simple joys quickly become clear. According to the shelter, he doesn’t need much to make him happy. A few scratches from a volunteer, a toy to carry around, and the chance to spend time with people are enough to make his tail wag. Despite his affectionate nature, the shelter adds that he has still received little interest from adopters.

The post’s caption shares more about Charlie’s story. Shelter staff describe the Pittie as “ridiculously sweet and full of joy.” One of his favorite activities is carrying around a stuffed toy before settling down for belly rubs and head scratches.

The shelter says Charlie simply “enjoys being around people.” Although he lost his family, he continues believing that every new person he meets “could be kind.” That unwavering trust, staff says, makes it especially difficult to watch him wait patiently for someone to choose him.

Charlie’s situation has now become urgent. According to the shelter, the six-year-old has been issued a 72-hour notification. As such, he is in need of an adopter or rescue placement as soon as possible.
