Caring for newborns is demanding, whether it’s a person or an animal doing the job. Mothers often spend so much time tending to their little ones that even a few quiet moments to rest can make a meaningful difference. Recently, a touching video from a shelter volunteer showed how one exhausted mama dog happily accepted a short timeout.

Madeline volunteers at a kill shelter and documents her experiences on Instagram through her account, @madtotherescue. In her latest post, she shared a sweet moment involving Morgana, a young mother dog who has been busy caring for a litter of rapidly growing puppies.

The video begins inside Morgana’s kennel, where her puppies are gathered around her nursing. As the camera focuses on the scene, text on the screen reads, “let’s give this mama a BREAK.” Morgana remains calm as her puppies feed, but her tired expression suggests she could use a little time to herself.

Recognizing that, Madeline gently takes Morgana out of the kennel while the puppies stay behind. The volunteer turns the outing into a chance for the young dog to simply enjoy being cared for instead of doing all the caregiving.

Morgana is rewarded with treats, affectionate pets, and plenty of belly rubs. She also gets to spend time outside soaking up the sunshine, a welcome change from the kennel. Throughout the visit, she stays close to Madeline, appearing relaxed and content as she enjoys the extra attention.

In the caption, Madeline explained why she wanted to share the moment. “From one mama to another, I’m glad I got to give sweet A2081048 Morgana a much deserved break,” she wrote. She also noted that “Nursing big puppies with teeth is not for the weak!!!” before reminding viewers that Morgana is “just a puppy herself.”

After a few peaceful minutes, it was time for Morgana to reunite with her litter. Madeline noted that when the mother dog first looked into the kennel, it seemed as though she had “no idea who they were.” The puppies, meanwhile, had clearly not forgotten their mom, barking excitedly as soon as they saw her return.

It didn’t take long for Morgana to slip back into her familiar routine. Moments later, she was back in her kennel, nursing her puppies once again.
