A child’s favorite toy can become surprisingly interesting when there is a curious family dog nearby. Duke, a Golden Retriever, could not seem to ignore the Barbie his little sisters were playing with in the backyard. After failing to take it from one of the girls, the clever pup waited for the perfect opportunity before making his move.
Golden Retriever grabs little girl’s Barbie and turns it into a backyard game
A throwback video shared by @thedukeofmadison shows a Golden Retriever named Duke getting involved in his little sister’s backyard playtime. The now five-year-old dog is seen spending time with the girls as they play beside a makeshift pool with a Barbie.
Duke initially hangs around the girls, but it does not take long for him to notice the doll. He watches the children playing and eventually makes his way toward the girl holding the Barbie. The pup tries to take it from her, but she manages to keep the toy away from him.
Duke does not appear ready to give up, though. When the girl eventually puts the Barbie into the water, the Golden Retriever quickly takes advantage of the opportunity. He reaches for the doll and grabs it in his mouth before running away with it. The clip then shows Duke racing around the backyard with the Barbie, seemingly turning the stolen toy into a game.
The family has since come to view the moment as more than just a funny video. In the caption, they called it “the video that started it all.” They explained that they were simply capturing everyday moments with Duke and their three daughters before they knew what their page would eventually become.
They said those were the kinds of silly family moments that they never realized they would treasure years later. Looking back, the family described their collection of memories as preserving their daughters’ “Duke era,” including the chaos, laughter, and the experience of watching their Golden Retriever become a familiar part of their childhood.
Viewers also seemed to recognize the behavior, with several commenters sharing stories of their own pups stealing children’s toys.
