It was Day 3 with a senior rescue dog in Instagram user @bigfluffytales’s home, and the 13-year-old dog, who had been found on the side of the road and was emotionally shutting down at the shelter, was now finally learning to trust again. His video explained that he kept circling a console table and staring at his owner. That direct eye contact was just Cloud taking a huge and terrifying step toward trust, as the caption read, “I can’t believe I caught this moment on camera.”

The backstory made the moment feel profound. In the caption, the senior rescue dog’s new owner wrote, “Staff told me there were days he didn’t even want to get up to go outside.” So one can only imagine the work it would take for someone to win Cloud’s trust again. Yet when they brought him home to foster, his little body trembling from fear, Cloud still asked for head scratches — and that tiny invitation said he was still open to connection.

In the video, the owner recorded the dog hovering around on the floor as she lay down to “get him familiar with me.” In the next scene, Cloud locked eyes with his owner and came closer, leaving her surprised as he slowly put his paws on the bed. Excited, the rescuer asked him to come nearer, which he eventually did by climbing on the bed.

When a human lies down, they make themselves less imposing, and the senior rescue dog’s choice to hold that gaze was a sign his nervous system was learning to trust the person before him. The owner had mentioned doing “gentle somatic work” and regulating her own nervous system first.

That is the heart of this story, because dogs read our emotional state with stunning accuracy, so a calm and grounded human invites a fearful dog to borrow that sense of safety. And just like that, the dog may have slowly believed that the world might be okay after all.
