Sick days usually mean canceled plans, extra naps, and a serious need for comfort. While soup and blankets help, nothing quite compares to unconditional companionship. Dogs, in particular, seem to know exactly when to slow down and stay close. That instinct is on full display in a viral video showing a massive dog gently watching over his sick kid.

Big dog stays by kid’s side in heartwarming video

The video, shared by @chewythenewfoundland, introduces Chewy, a large Newfoundland dog, whose young human had stayed home from school feeling unwell. Onscreen text explains the situation simply: “His kid stayed home from school sick.”

From the beginning, Chewy appears unusually subdued with a calm, almost worried expression, as though he understands something is wrong. As the camera rolls, he lingers close to the child, who is resting at home.

His owner can be heard asking him if he wants to stay by her side all day, and the answer becomes clear without words. Clip after clip shows the big dog planted firmly next to the girl, offering steady companionship. He sits quietly beside her, allowing her to lean into his thick fur for comfort.

At one point, the child wraps her arms around Chewy in a gentle hug, clearly finding reassurance in his presence. Another caption reads, “He refused to leave her side,” and the footage supports that claim. Even when there are opportunities to move around the house, Chewy remains nearby, attentive and calm.

Viewers flooded the comments with variations of the same sentiment echoed in the video’s caption: “We don’t deserve dogs.” For many, Chewy’s loyalty felt both relatable and deeply moving.

Newfoundlands like Chewy are especially known for this type of behavior. They were originally bred as working dogs for fishermen in Canada, and are famous for their strength, calm temperament, and natural caregiving instincts.

Often nicknamed “nanny dogs,” Newfoundlands are incredibly patient and protective around children. Their large size is balanced by a gentle disposition, making them attentive family companions.

While every dog is unique, the breed is widely recognized for its loyalty and sensitivity, qualities clearly reflected in Chewy’s quiet decision to stay exactly where he was needed most.
